My Charity Connects is a two-day conference that aims to build the capacity of the charitable sector by connecting charities to online technology – in easy and cost-effective ways.

With the pace at which technology is advancing, the bridge between donors and charities is ever increasing. Though donors are ready to raise awareness and funds for their favourite causes, many are eager to do so in technologically innovative ways … ways that aren’t so familiar to, or practised by, many charities. It’s not that charities aren’t interested, it’s that they’re strapped for both financial and human resources, doubtful that the investment will reap the rewards, and perhaps a little fearful of the seemingly complicated online space and all it has to offer.

It’s time to bridge the gap. On June 8 & 9, 2009, with an expected attendance of 250 people, CanadaHelps will be hosting the My Charity Connects Conference for those charities interested in enhancing their connection and engagement with donors online, with the aim to:

  • Reduce the fear and frustration of technology often felt by small and medium sized charities;
  • Engage the charitable sector in an interactive manner to demonstrate the value and ease of technology and how it can assist in their efforts;
  • Provide opportunities for individuals from the sector to network and learn best practices from one another; and
  • Build the capacity of the sector through their use of technology and improve their overall comfort level with new media in general.

There are other conferences out there and other ways to get connected, but what makes this conference unique is that it’s:

  • Geared to various positions within small, medium and large-sized charities
  • Affordable (subsidized in great part by the Ontario Trillium Foundation)
  • Speaks to topics that donors are interested in but also ones in which charities can realistically engage
  • Presented by a charitable foundation that speaks the sector language and understand the sector’s needs

My Charity Connects is the third phase in an outreach initiative funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. In Phase I (Fall 2008) CanadaHelps consulted with the charitable sector to confirm what their technology issues were and what it is they wanted to learn. In Phase II (Fall 2008 – Fall 2009), CanadaHelps is developing a series of easy-to-use learning tools, in print and web formats, for a new online resource centre. My Charity Connects engages charities in person and introduces them to various options worthy of consideration as they embark on new, efficient and innovative ways to raise awareness and funds online.
